Burns & McDonnell, a 100 percent employee-owned, full-service engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting services firm, is celebrating some impressive accomplishments in its transmission and development (T&D) sector. The recent development of a more robust national electric power grid has continued a trend of double-digit growth for the T&D division of the company; it reported annual T&D engineering revenue of $272.6 million this year, up 18 percent from 2013.

These improvements have resulted in a #1 ranking on Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine’s annual list of firms providing engineering design services in the T&D sector.

“We’ve been successful in part because we’re seeing a large shift in project delivery toward engineer-procure-construct (EPC) and program management, which are our specialties,” said John Olander, president of the T&D division. “EPC is becoming popular with our utility clients because they are facing major attrition among professional staff and often don’t have the resources to manage mega-scale transmission projects like they may have in the past. EPC takes some of the risk burden off the client’s shoulders while giving them more cost and schedule certainty.”

With the multi-disciplinary expertise of more than 4,700 professionals in more than 30 regional, national and international offices, Burns & McDonnell is able to offer its clients one source for both engineering design and construction.

Since 1898, Burns & McDonnell have been providing engineering design and construction management services for some of the largest electrical transmission, distribution and substation projects in North America. Burns & McDonnell and Burns & McDonnell-Canada now employ more than 1,000 engineers, technical specialists and construction managers. As a result of that activity, Burns & McDonnell also ranked as the largest firm on the Electrical Construction & Maintenance ranking of Top 10 firms providing electrical design services.

Burns & McDonnell become employee-owned more than half a century ago. Today, it ranks 14th on FORTUNE magazine’s 100 best companies to work for.  ESCA congratulates Burns & McDonnell on these outstanding accomplishments.
