Border States Electric and its employee-owners were recently honored with two awards recognizing their support of the men and women that serve in the National Guard and the US Army Reserves.

Three employee-owners were recognized with the Patriot Award from the North Dakota Committee, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. Tobin Spooner, Alliance Sourcing and Pricing Supervisor; Brad Alm, Sourcing Manager; and Treavor Peterson, Customer Supply Chain Manager; received the award for their efforts to support Citizen Warriors. The three were nominated by First Lieutenant Maranda McDougall, Alliance Sourcing Specialist at BSE who also serves with the US Army Reserve.

McDougall said of the award: “The support I’ve received at Border States allows me to focus on my current missions as a Soldier and the family I leave back home.” She continued saying, “I knew from the first day of my interview as I walked in the doors and saw the American flag hanging that it would be a good fit.”

Border States Electric was also recognized for their commitment to support the men and women of the National Guard and the military Reserves. The Above and Beyond Award is given to employers who offer benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages or extended health benefits to their employee’s serving in the Guard or Reserves. Upon presenting the award, John Carlson of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve said, “Border States has demonstrated time and again they are a company which goes well above and beyond to help our men and women who serve in the guard and reserve.”

To anyone familiar with employee-owned companies, this award comes as no surprise. The strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork at these firms not only benefit the culture inside the company and in turn the firm’s bottom line, but clearly have an impact on their local communities as well.

Tammy Miller, CEO of Border States reiterated this point saying: “At Border States we share our resources to enhance the quality of life in the communities where we live. Our employee-owners practice good citizenship. We encourage everyone to find ways to give back—Maranda’s service and  these awards demonstrates that—it’s not a sacrifice for us to be flexible with employee-owners, like Maranda, who give so much time protecting the freedom we enjoy.”

ESCA congratulates employee-owners Tobin Spooner, Brad Alm, Treavor Peterson and Border States Electric for receiving their respective awards and thanks them for their commitment to our men and women in uniform.
